The Supermarine Spitfire:

The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most famous British fighter aircraft in history. Known mainly from the battles over Europe such as the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire was the mainstay of the Royal Air Force during World War II. Between 1938 and 1948 20,351 machines were built in a variety of versions. While the last version, the Mk 24, had little in common with the Spitfire Mk I, the Mk V and Mk IX were the most built with over 12,000 machines. These were mainly used over Europe, but also partly in the Pacific and Russia. The Spitfire was loved by its pilots and could always keep up with the German Messerschmidt and Focke-Wulfs with its flight performance.
