Elegant poster with the legendary Spitfire Mk IX. The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most famous British fighter in history. Mainly known from the battles over Europe such as the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire was the mainstay of the Royal Air Force during World War II. Between 1938 and 1948, 20,351 machines were built in a variety of versions. While the last version, the Mk 24, had little to do with the Spitfire Mk I, the Mk V and the Mk IX were the most built with over 12,000 machines. These were mainly used across Europe, but also partly in the Pacific and Russia. The Spitfire was loved by its pilots and with its flight performance it was able to keep up with the German Messerschmidt and Focke-Wulfs on an equal footing.
