The F-4 Phantom is probably one of the best known and most widely used fighter jets in the world. Developed by McDonnell Douglas for the USAF as an air superiority fighter, a proud 5,195 machines in many different versions were built between 1958 and 1981. Shortly after its commissioning, the Phantom was already used in the Vietnam War, where it was given a further role as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. The F-4 already proved to be very robust at this time and was superior to the enemy aircraft. The F-4 Phantom has also been exported to several countries and some machines are still in use.
