The legendary Avro Lancaster formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force Bomber Command during World War II and was mainly used for night missions over Europe. One version could use the 10,000 kg "Grand Slam" bomb and thus had the largest payload of all bombers of that time. With over 7,370 machines built, the Lancaster became famous primarily for special missions such as the 1943 attacks on the Ruhr dams. A special bomb was used, which could jump over the water surface up to the dam wall. Currently only 2 Lancasters are in a flightworthy condition worldwide.
